Vol. 531 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Funding.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

428 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 283 of 13 February 2001, he will explain the phrase, "it is my intention that this report will continue to inform policy on school funding"; the meaning of this in practical terms; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5572/01]

The report of the steering group on the funding of second level schools represents a comprehensive review of the funding arrangements and is a valuable document in both its analysis and clarity of approach. In undertaking its task, the group had access to the latest and most detailed research information available.

At the core of the recommendations made for future funding arrangements are the principles of equity of treatment, transparency of funding structures and adequacy of funding levels. Although my priority is to focus on the issue of adequacy of funding, I am aware of the traditional anomalies that have evolved in the funding arrangements for the different school types at second level, and it is my intention to bring greater uniformity and cohesion to this aspect of the funding of schools.

My approach has clearly shown my commitment and determination to improve funding at second level and I intend to build further on progress to date.
