Vol. 531 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of related notices under Standing Order 31 from Deputies Naughten and J. Higgins. I propose to call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following matter of urgent national importance. Following the statement by the Minister of State, Deputy Jacob, to the House yesterday that Irish Rail had furnished him with inaccurate information and given that the inquiry and retraining structures of Irish Rail following such rail incidents is totally inadequate, there is an urgent need for a review of rail safety procedures and to ensure that the rail safety inspector has the statutory authority to review such procedures and initiate investigations into rail incidents.

(Mayo): I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following matter requiring urgent consideration, namely, the misinformation supplied to the Minister of State, Deputy Jacob, by Iarnród Éireann regarding a train incident at Kiltoom, County Roscommon, on 22 December 2000, which led to the Minister of State inadvertently misleading the Dáil last week and his subsequent statement and retraction in the Dáil yesterday evening and the serious consequences for public safety and the integrity of the Dáil of such misleading information.

Having considered the matters fully, I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motions.
