Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

116 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the extent to which the flooding of various rail services and facilities is deemed to constitute a safety hazard; the extent to which this safety hazard is being addressed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8536/01]

The assessment of hazards to the safety of the national railway network is an operational matter for Iarnród Éireann and I have, therefore, no function in the matter. However, I understand from Iarnród Éireann that the risk to the railway from flooding is low. Iarnród Éireann has advised me that it continually monitors the railway lines and infrastructure. In addition, Iarnród Éireann has commissioned consultants to carry out a study to assess the condition of embankments, cuttings and similar structures, including river and coastal defences. The report of this study is imminent and Iarnród Éireann has advised me that it will assist it in decision-making regarding risks to the railway.
