Vol. 533 No. 4

Written Answers. - Teachers' Pay.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

184 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will have investigations made into the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kildare was not paid while on sick leave; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9228/01]

Qualified teachers in primary schools are allowed a maximum of 365 days paid sick leave in any period of four consecutive working years, but unqualified teachers have no such entitlement.

The teacher in question was on sick leave from 11 to 17 January 2001, inclusive. As she is an unqualified teacher, she has no entitlement to payment of salary while on such leave.

However, as the teacher has been paying PRSI at the class A rate, she may be entitled to claim sick benefit from the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs when absent on sick leave.
