Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mental Health Services.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

112 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals he has to ensure that admission procedures to psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric units for patients presenting with challenging behaviour protect in every possible way the personal dignity of each and every patient (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9384/01]

The admission procedures for patients presenting at a psychiatric hospital or psychiatric unit have been set out in the guidelines on good practice and quality assurance in mental health services which was published by my Department. It states that the admission procedure from both the medical and nursing point of view should be effected in physical surroundings that are reassuring, comfortable and private.

In relation to the specific case outlined in the details supplied by the Deputy, I have referred the matter to the chief executive officer of the board concerned and requested him to report to me on the matter and to reply directly to the Deputy.
