Ceist:

173 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the name, remit, budget and responsibility, including its headquarters and staff, of any organisation or agency under the aegis of his Department involved in any type of development in the BMW region; the monitoring process involved by his Department in respect of such development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Name:Bord Bia

Remit/Responsibility: To promote, assist and develop the marketing of Irish food and livestock under the marketing priority of the Productive Sector Operational programme (PSOP), an allocation of £48 million has been provided for the period 2000-2006 to facilitate Bord Bia in achieving its overall objective of increasing sales of Irish food and drink. Part of this allocation will be used to assist SME food companies to develop their marketing capabilities. Even though the grants programme is not differentiated by region, many of these companies are located in the BMW region. Likewise the general promotion activities engaged in by Bord Bia, though not region specific are of benefit to the BMW region.

Monitoring process:The reporting arrangements under the Productive Sector Operational Programme provide for monitoring of expenditure on a regional basis.

Name: Teagasc:The Agriculture and Food Development Authority
Remit-responsibility: To provide research, training and advisory services for the development of the agri-food industry and rural areas in Ireland.
Budget: £93.5 million (year 2000)

Monitoring process: Regarding development in the BMW region, my Department is involved in a monitoring process in relation to NDP-funded activities. This process involves monitoring physical and financial indicators of progress which are presented to the monitoring committee for the BMW Regional Operational Programme. In addition to NDP-funded activities, Teagasc provide services for the development of the agri-food industry and rural areas on a countrywide basis. The operation of these services is a matter for Teagasc itself.

Remit-responsibility: To develop, promote, facilitate, encourage, co-ordinate and assist the production, marketing and consumption of horticultural produce.

Name of Body:Western Development Commission
Remit: To foster and encourage economic and social development in the Western Region (i.e. Connaught and County Clare and County Donegal).
Budget:£5.639 million in 2001.
Responsibility:The Commission manages and controls the £25 million Western Investment Fund.
