Written Answers. - Measles Related Deaths.

John Gormley

Ceist:

221 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if he can supply figures for the official death rate from measles here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9524/01]

John Gormley

Ceist:

232 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if he can confirm that in the two measles related deaths reported, one was a case of a severely undernourished child and the other had a tracheoesophageal condition; if he could indicate their ages, cause of death and any other details which would be relevant; if they were admitted to hospital with suspected measles or if they contracted measles while in hospital for other conditions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9535/01]

John Gormley

Ceist:

233 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children the vaccination status for both measles cases which resulted in death including all early vaccinations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9536/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 221, 232 and 233 together.

There were two measles related deaths during the year 2000, both of which occurred in the Eastern Regional Health Authority area. However, as the Deputy will appreciate, as there are only two cases involved, it would be inappropriate of me to comment on the particular cases in order to protect the identities of the families concerned. These tragic deaths clearly demonstrate the potential serious consequences of the disease. I therefore urge all parents to ensure their children receive their primary childhood immunisations, which are available free of charge from their family doctor, which will protect them and the wider community against these diseases.
