Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Taxi By-Laws.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

382 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason for the delay in approving by-laws to establish taxi ranks in Mullingar, County Westmeath; and when these by-laws will be approved. [9687/01]

The making of by-laws in relation to the establishing of taxi ranks is a matter for the Garda Commissioner and the Minister for the Environment and Local Government and I have no direct function in the matter. However, I am informed by the Garda authorities that the draft schedule of appointed stands has been drawn up by the Garda following discussions with officials of Westmeath County Council and representatives of the Taxi Drivers Association. The process involved in drawing up the draft schedule involved a lengthy and detailed consultative process in order to ensure that the matter was resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that as agreement has been reached between all the statutory and interested parties it is anticipated that final approval will be forthcoming in the near future.
