Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if a work permit can be issued to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and the arrangements in place for such persons to apply without leaving the country. [9859/01]

I understand the person concerned is a Nigerian national who wishes to take up employment in the health sector.

Non-EEA nationals, including Nigerians, who require a visa to enter the State, must normally leave in order to change their status if they wish to work here. Change of status within the State is a matter, in the first instance, for my colleague, the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform with whom the Deputy may wish to raise this issue. A work permit may also issue when the appropriate status has been obtained.
