Vol. 534 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Ceist:

223 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 357 of 6 March 2001, he will provide statistics for the number of unqualified teachers in secondary schools. [10198/01]

Fully qualified second level teachers are paid at the appropriate point on the common basic salary scale for teachers together with appropriate qualification allowances. There are 144 teachers employed in voluntary secondary, community and comprehensive schools on my Department's second level teacher's payroll who are not in receipt of qualification allowances which indicates that they are not regarded as fully qualified for the teaching posts which they hold. The qualifications held by 119 of the teachers concerned are being assessed. The remaining 25 are not fully recognised either because of a lack of a required training-in-teaching qualification or a recognised qualification in the specific subject, or subjects, of the teaching post held. As teachers employed in the vocational sector and teachers employed on a part-time capacity in voluntary secondary, community and comprehensive schools are not on my Department's second level teacher payroll, I am not in a position to give details of the number of such teachers who are unqualified.
