Ceist:

109 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the extent to which he has received information from the various local authorities alerting him to the need to improve sewerage schemes throughout the country with the objective of the elimination of the pollution of waterways; the funds he has allocated in 2001 to target this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10338/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 108 and 109 together.

Local authorities are required to prepare an assessment of water services needs every five years. The main purpose of the assessments is to develop an overall strategic investment plan for each area for the medium to long-term and to set out a programme of works to meet identified needs. The most recent assessments carried out by authorities relate to the periods 2000-2006 and 2007-2118. The assessments were taken into account in the framing of the Water Services Investment Programme 2000-2002, published by my Department in July 2000, a copy of which is available in the Oireachtas Library.

The capital provision for water services in 2001 is £330 million.
