Vol. 534 No. 4

Written Answers - Hospital Acquisition.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

136 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has satisfied himself with the continued delay in finalising the acquisition by the Western Health Board of Portiuncula hospital, Ballinasloe; if his attention has been drawn to the local concern by this delay; the plans he has to complete outstanding negotiation difficulties if such exist; the final date for transfer; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10919/01]

Discussions are ongoing between my Department, the Western Health Board and the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood, as owners of Portiuncula Hospital, in relation to finalising arrangements for a transfer of ownership of the hospital. Certain issues have arisen from these discussions which require further clarification and professional advice. I remain committed to progressing the transfer of ownership of Portiuncula hospital at the earliest possible date. In the meantime, services at the hospital are continuing to be provided to patients.

Ceist:

137 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received from the Western Health Board information requested following his meeting with a deputation from the Board regarding the acquisition of the Grove Hospital and site for the provision of a community hospital for Tuam and its catchment area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10920/01]

At the meeting between the Minister, Deputy Martin, and a deputation from the Western Health Board earlier this year, it was agreed that the board would enter into negotiations concerning the possible purchase of the Bons Secours hospital in Tuam plus some adjoining land. This matter is still in the hands of estate agents representing both sides and I will communicate with the Deputy as soon as there is something definite to report.
