Vol. 534 No. 4

Written Answers - Garda Retirement Age.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

204 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress which has been made to extend the Garda retirement age from 57 years to 60 years; the likely time schedule associated with the required procedures, given the decision in principle on this issue is positive; if he will consider applications by gardaí who are approaching 57 years and wish to remain in the service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Ceist:

209 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress that has been made to extend the Garda retirement age from 57 to 60 years; the likely time schedule associated with the required procedures, in view of the decision in principle on this issue is positive; if he will consider applications by gardaí who are approaching 57 years and wish to remain in the service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10977/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 204 and 209 together.

I have requested the views of the Garda authorities on the recommendations contained in the recent final report of the Commission on Public Service Pensions in relation to the minimum and maximum retirement ages for new entrants to the Garda Síochána. When these views are to hand I will consider the matter further.
