Vol. 534 No. 4

Written Answers - National Theatre.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

45 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the position on the future of the Abbey Theatre; if it has been possible to acquire additional ground adjacent to the existing building; and if not, the location of the new project. [10668/01]

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

46 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands her views on the suggestion made at a recent meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Heritage and the Irish Language that the Abbey Theatre should seek to build a new theatre at a new venue, but also retain its existing premises as headquarters of a touring company; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10702/01]

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

47 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she has yet received the report sought from the Office of Public Works, Dublin Corporation and the National Theatre Society regarding the options that might exist in regard to the acquisition of site space adjacent to the existing Abbey Theatre site with a view to developing a new landmark theatre at this location; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10701/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 45 to 47, inclusive, together.

In the interest of the future of the National Theatre it is incumbent on me to evaluate all the options available regarding its redevelopment and this evaluation is ongoing.

It is my stated preference that the National Theatre should, if at all possible, remain on Abbey Street provided space and design constraints do not mitigate against that. The Office of Public Works, at my request, is currently exploring the option of acquiring additional site space adjacent to the existing site for the develop ment of a new landmark theatre there. The Office of Public Works is also examining other possible city centre sites. The Office of Public Works report on these aspects, which will be submitted to me in the coming weeks, will inform my consideration of the options available and the proposals I will bring to Government in due course.
