Vol. 534 No. 4

Order of Business. - Business of Dáil.

(Dublin West): I thought the Minister might say a few words when the Bill concluded, and obviously time was short in the discussion of it but on behalf of myself and the Socialist Party, we fully support the removal of the death penalty from the Constitution.

In regard to the referendum, will the question on the ballot paper presented to the public be very clear, namely, that it is to remove the death penalty? Sometimes referenda can be quite tech nical, for example, the one on Nice will not have the content—

Acting Chairman

The Deputy is not in order but he has made his point.

(Dublin West): It would be worthwhile that the people know exactly the question because we will be facing four questions.

In expressing my appreciation to you, a Chathaoirleach, other Chairpersons and Members of the House on the passage of this legislation, can I briefly answer Deputy Higgins? The ballot paper will make it clear that this referendum is about the prohibition of the death penalty. It will also be in Irish for people such as Deputy Higgins's namesake.
