Ceist:

335 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will investigate the claims made in a recent newspaper article (details supplied) with regard to operations carried out on women in the 1950s; the number of operations carried out; the complications which resulted as a consequence; his views on whether those who suffered from this unnecessary intervention should be compensated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Health and Children (Mr. Martin)

I am most concerned about the recent publicity in the media concerning the use of symphysi otomy in obstetrical practice in the 1950s and 1960s. As a consequence, the chief medical officer, CMO, at my Department has asked the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to examine the issues raised and to report back to him as soon as possible. I will revert to the Deputy when the findings of the institute become available and have been considered by the CMO.
