Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Television Broadcasting.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

486 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will investigate the legislation necessary or the regulations applicable to ensure that the national television stations provide subtitles for the benefit of the many members of the community who con tacted each Deputy in recent representations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12237/01]

I refer the Deputy to the reply to Question No. 193 on 28 February 2001 and to the reply to Question No. 134 on 8 March 2001 relating to relevant provisions of the Broadcasting Bill, 1999, which has now been signed into law.

During the course of the debate on the Broadcasting Bill, I undertook in the Dáil and the Seanad to make known to the Independent Radio and Television Commission the strength of feeling and the sense of urgency expressed in relation to this matter. I wrote to the Independent Radio and Television Commission outlining the strong views of the Oireachtas and I received a response on 11 April. I am arranging to have a copy of the response forwarded to the Deputy.

Question No. 487 answered with Question No. 471.
