Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Schools Refurbishment.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

612 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need for remedial works to be carried out at a school (details supplied) in County Wexford; the works which are proposed for this school; the stage at which this project is; when such works are likely to be carried out; and if he will make a statement on the position regarding a project of works for this school. [11583/01]

In view of the large number of school building projects being dealt with by my Department at present, it is not possible at this point to provide a timeframe as to when the proposed building project at the school referred to by the Deputy can be included for capital funding.

The school authorities will be informed of any developments in the matter.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

613 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve the retention of the eleventh class teacher in a school (details supplied) in County Dublin. [11618/01]

The staffing of a primary school for a particular year is determined by reference to the number of pupils enrolled on 30 September of the previous year. The number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule and is finalised for a particular year following discussions with the education partners.

The enrolment of 301 pupils on 30 September 1999, in the school in question warranted a staffing of a principal and 11 mainstream class teachers for the current school year.

The enrolment declined to 299 pupils on 30 September 2000, and accordingly, the staffing warranted for the 2001-02 school year is a principal and ten mainstream class teachers.

The number of pupils required to retain the eleventh mainstream class teacher for the 2001-02 school year is 300.

The school also has the services of a language support teacher and a special class teacher.

The only deviation from the agreed schedule to which I referred is in the case of schools that are experiencing a large increase in enrolments. In such cases an additional staffing post may be sanctioned by my Department if the school meets the defined criteria.
