Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Classroom Assistants.

John Bruton

Ceist:

627 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the anomaly in the payment of classroom assistants in the vocational sector who are paid hourly and the fact that their counterparts in the primary school sector are paid an annual salary; if he plans to amend this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11713/01]

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

654 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to deal with the anomaly in the payment of classroom assistants in a school (details supplied) in County Meath; his views on whether it will be possible to keep these people unless this matter is rectified; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11960/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 627 and 654 together.

My Department is aware of the issue and is reviewing the position with regard to the salary and conditions applicable to special needs classroom assistants who are employed in second level schools. I will advise the Deputies of the outcome of this review.
