Vol. 535 No. 3

Written Answers - Light Rail Project.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

96 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when the Luas line will be completed; and the current progress of the Sandyford line. [12639/01]

In May 1998, I set an indicative timetable for the construction and completion of the light rail lines from Tallaght to Connolly Station and from Sandyford to St. Stephen's Green. Based on progress to date, I am satisfied that the target date of 2003 for commencement of services will be achieved. The light rail advisory and action group I established to oversee the timetable for the project, reported to me in February 2001 and assured me that the target date of 2003 remains feasible.

On the Sandyford to St. Stephen's Green line, preparatory works and the property acquisition programme are progressing. Environmental works in the Sandyford depot area have been completed. Physical work on the Taney Bridge will begin in June 2001. Contractors have been selected for the main construction elements of the project, involving mainly track-laying and cabling for all lines, and this work will commence on the Sandyford line during the summer. The competition to select an operator for the system is progressing with a view to awarding the franchise in October 2001.
