Written Answers - Specialist Nursing Posts.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

195 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will arrange to have many more trained Parkinson's disease nurse specialists available in all health board areas to ensure that the services of these trained specialists are available to all patients suffering from Parkinson's disease and their carers. [12948/01]

The national council for the professional development of nursing and midwifery is the statutory agency with responsibility for the post-registration development of nursing and midwifery. In particular, it is responsible for the monitoring of the ongoing development of nursing and midwifery specialities, taking into account changes in practice and service need. The national council is working closely with the health boards, mainly through the nursing and midwifery planning and development units, to ensure that cohesive plans for the regional development of specialist nursing posts are developed.
