18 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if An Bord Gáis proposes to lay a cable duct or corridor adjacent to the proposed gas pipeline from Dublin to Galway and from Galway to north Mayo and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13212/01]
My information is that Bord Gáis Éireann proposes to lay ducting adjacent to the proposed gas pipeline from Dublin to Galway and the proposed gas pipeline from north Mayo to Galway. The ducting will facilitate the installation of fibre-optic cable at a future date, as part of the provision of a telecommunications broadband infrastructure. Provided the costs, which are relatively modest, are accounted for transparently and that there are no negative consequences for the gas infrastructure, it appears to make sense to take advantage of the trenching in this way.
