Vol. 536 No. 2

Written Answers - Foot and Mouth Disease.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

224 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the estimated figures within his Department for payouts of compensation due, to date, as a result of the foot and mouth outbreak for sheep destruction or cull, and bovine destruction or cull; the estimated cost of public disinfection programmes on the Border; the overtime costs for the provision of manpower in control locations; the cost to date of the BSE destruction scheme; and the cost of compensation in these cases. [13723/01]

The information requested by the Deputy which is contained in the following schedule, refers to payments which have been made to date:

Schedule

1.Foot and Mouth Disease Compensation

The cost associated with this disease outbreak and the necessary preventative measures amount to £14,601,155, of which £6,186,889 comes under the heading of compensation. Assuming that no further disease outbreaks take place, it is estimated that the total costs amount to £23 million, of which £8 million will also be devoted to compensation.

2.Disinfectant Costs

The cost of disinfectants pertaining to my Department amounts to £2,409,776. According to figures supplied by the Office of Public Works, expenditure to date on public disinfectant programmes on the Border, parks and public places is in the order of £550,000. It is anticipated that this figure will increase as further invoices are received and as long as these programmes are required to remain in place.

3.Overtime Costs To Date

Administrative Grades: £691,415.55

Veterinary Staff (Unsocial Hours): £123.32

Veterinary Staff (Weekend Duty): £4,827.58

4.BSE Costs

As at 10 May 2001, a total of 224,630 animals have been slaughtered under the purchase for destruction scheme, at a purchase cost of approximately £132 million.
