Vol. 536 No. 2

Written Answers - Third Level Education.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

433 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason it is not possible for a mature student to study law on a part time course at University College Galway without having a primary degree; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13522/01]

The admission arrangements and the range of courses offered by a university are matters for the individual university concerned. My officials have raised the matter with the Higher Education Authority and I understand that the Bachelor of Laws, LL.B., degree of the National University of Ireland, Galway is a postgraduate qualification, which may be pursued on either a full-time or a part-time basis. Entry to the degree programme is restricted to those holding an approved university degree. In certain circumstances an approved professional qualification may be accepted in lieu of a degree. These entry requirements apply equally to the full-time and part-time options. The National University of Ireland, Galway offers two undergraduate degree programmes in law, namely the Bachelor of Corporate Law and the Bachelor of Civil Law. Both programmes are full-time programmes of three years' duration. The university does not offer any undergraduate degree programmes in law on a part-time basis.
