Vol. 536 No. 5

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

177 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance when work will commence on the Shinkeen Stream, Hazelhatch, County Kildare; the work involved; and the timetable for completion of this scheme. [15113/01]

Works on the scheme documentation required to have the Shinkeen Stream, Hazelhatch drainage scheme confirmed and advanced to works stage are being proposed by the Office of Public Works within the severe constraints imposed by the foot and mouth disease crisis. All going well, it is envisaged that the scheme might now reach works stage in July 2001 and be substantially completed by the end of the year.

The preparatory works being undertaken, which arose as a result of the observations submitted by the general public and landowners in the area following the exhibition of the scheme in December 2000, involve making alterations to the scheme design so as to afford protection against a 100 year flood event rather than the 50 year flood protection originally proposed. The design amendments which will alleviate flooding in the Hazelhatch area include channel improvements, some channel realignment, bridge replacements and ancillary works such as fencing, spoil treatment and environmental mitigation measures.
