Vol. 536 No. 6

Written Answers. - Senior Garda Appointments.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

97 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the new proposals being put in place for filling top-level posts in the Garda Síochána; if he has considered the appointment of an independent Garda authority to deal with, among other matters, the filling of such positions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15003/01]

The current arrangements for selection of candidates for appointment to the post of Assistant Commissioner are governed by the Garda Siochána (Promotion) Regulations, 1987, as amended. The need to review the selection procedures for appointments to the post of Assistant Commissioner was identified in the context of the strategic management initiative and I am currently consulting the Garda authorities and the Garda staff associations in relation to options for change.

I plan to submit proposals to Government for relevant amendments to the regulations in the very near future. I do not envisage establishing an independent Garda authority to deal with the filling of such positions.
