Vol. 536 No. 6

Written Answers. - Organised Crime.

Ceist:

113 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has considered establishing a special task force to investigate the level of organised crime and racketeering carried out by paramilitary organisations in the jurisdiction who have declared a ceasefire; if moneys from such illegal activities have been used to fund political party activities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14563/01]

As I stated in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 534 of 1 May, 2001, the Garda authorities have informed me that a small proportion of organised crime groups have historical or current links to paramilitary organisations, although it is difficult to be precise about the exact nature of the links maintained by organised crime groups. I am advised by the Garda Commissioner that he has no plans to establish any new task force to investigate the crimes referred to by the Deputy. Any such activities which come to light will continue to be investigated within the existing structures of the Garda Síochána. I am also advised by the Garda Commissioner that there is no hard evidence to substantiate the allegation that the proceeds of such criminal activities are being diverted into any registered political party.
