Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hazardous Materials.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

136 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Defence if the new facility to receive radioactive waste at the logistics base at the Curragh will be ready to receive waste from Clancy Barracks, Dublin 8, before the barracks are sold by private tender on 14 June 2001. [15596/01]

The building of ordnance facilities in the Curragh, which will include a special radioactive storage facility, is ongoing and will be completed by September 2001. At that stage, the isolated radioactive segments from the decommissioned mortars will be transferred from Clancy Barracks to the new facility. As I have mentioned in replies to previous questions raised in the House on this issue, the storage of the material in these facilities is in strict accordance with the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, RPII, guidelines and presents no danger to military personnel.

The sale of Clancy Barracks on 14 June 2001 is by public tender. However, the sale of the barracks will not be completed until the end of the year.
