Austin Currie

Ceist:

352 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the proposed Adamstown, County Dublin area plan, with a projected population of 21,000, for the new town; if he will give consideration to the policing challenge such a new town will create, particularly for the gardaí in Lucan and Ronanstown; if a new police station will be required; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15912/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 337 and 352 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that Adamstown is in the Lucan Garda district.

I am further informed that Garda manpower assigned to the district in question, together with overall policing arrangements and operational strategy, are continually monitored and reviewed to ensure that optimum use is made of Garda resources and that the best possible service is provided to the community. Community policing will be extended to cover new developments and new Neighbourhood Watch schemes will be established as appropriate. As regards the question of a Garda station in Adamstown, I am informed that the Garda authorities have no proposals for the establishment of such a facility.

I am assured that the situation will be kept under review as the population of the district increases and that, as additional manpower becomes available, the needs of the district will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
