Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Residence Certificates.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

345 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the criteria and conditions which apply for the replacement of identity cards regarding asylum seekers; if he will make immediate arrangements for the replacement of an identity card for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15802/01]

Under the provisions of the Refugee Act, 1996, as amended, the Refugee Applications Commissioner – RAC – is required to give an applicant for asylum a temporary residence certificate – TRC. This certificate which is not an identity card is a very important and valuable document and is the property of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

Persons who lose their TRC are obliged to report the loss to the Garda which, in turn, notifies the loss to the RAC which will normally issue a replacement. The person named should, if he has not already done so, immediately notify the Garda of the loss of the TRC to enable procedures for the issue of a replacement to commence.
