Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Marine Accidents.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

148 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the extent of inquiries carried out by his Department into a fatal drowning accident (details supplied); the people interviewed during the inquiry; the conclusions drawn; and the recommendations made by the inquiry, if any. [16693/01]

My Department carried out a non-statutory review into the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident last November at the pier at Cora Point, Inishmaan, County Galway. A number of witnesses to the incident were interviewed by a surveyor from my Department. The review identified certain public safety concerns at the pier which is subject to over-topping sea swells and Galway County Council has undertaken to address these matters. The report of the review will, in accordance with normal practice, be published following legal vetting and the application of natural justice procedures.
