Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Labour Relations Commission Determinations.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

391 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason the Labour Relations Commission determination No. CC/99/960 received on 30 November 2000 and the Labour Court recommendation No. 16684 received on 1 December 2000 between Dublin University and SIPTU has not been implemented; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18546/01]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department has recently approved the terms of the court's recommendation on the pay claim in question and the college has been informed.

This pay claim under the Programme for Competitiveness and Work has been the subject of intensive negotiations since 1996 between the employer, Trinity College, Dublin, and the union concerned.

In the course of the negotiations, the union has already rejected two previous Labour Court recommendations, No. 15717 of 28 November 1997 and No. 15910 of 23 June 1998.

Full costings and other important details regarding Labour Court recommendation No. 16684 were received by my Department in March 2001 and required detailed examination by officials of my Department in consultation with the Department of Finance.

Ceist:

392 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will list the Labour Relations Committee determinations in the education area that have not been implemented by any college or agency dealing with third level education matters; if he will give the reason therefor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18547/01]

At any one time the Labour Relations Commission and the Labour Court may be dealing with industrial relations issues in many different educational institutions. These institutions would consult my Department where the issues would have implications for Government pay policy but would not involve the Department in many other circumstances. If the Deputy identifies a particular case or cases involving my Department I will be happy to provide specific information.
