Vol. 539 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

163 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received from a group of parents in Dublin a proposal to establish for their children who suffer from autism a CABAS unit similar to the unit in Cork; if he has commented on this proposal; if he will agree to establish this kind of unit in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19398/01]

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

168 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science his response to the proposal made to him to establish a CABAS unit for autistic children in Dublin; the steps he will take to facilitate this unit being opened for the next school year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19178/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 163 and 168 together.

I have received the proposal to which the Deputies refer. The development which has been proposed raises a range of detailed and complex issues which require careful consideration.

I am currently considering this proposal in the overall context of provision for children with autism. I hope to be in a position to give a decision on the matter in the near future.
