Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pharmacy Services.

Conor Lenihan

Ceist:

258 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Health and Children the measures he proposes to take to ensure that there is no undermining of the commercial and social viability of local communities through the withdrawal of retail pharmacy outlets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19670/01]

As Minister for Health and Children, my responsibilities centre on the provision of a high quality health service. This includes ensuring, in so far as is possible, that adequate and accessible pharmacy services are generally available. A decision to close a pharmacy for commercial reasons is a matter for the proprietor concerned.

If the Deputy has a particular concern in this area, I will arrange to have inquiries made if he communicates the details to me.
