Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

102 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans his Department has to upgrade the present road from Ballylicky to Crookstown, County Cork to cater for the articulated lorry traffic generated by the landings of fish at Castletownbere and transported from there to the continent. [19800/01]

The maintenance and improvement of non-national roads in their areas is a matter for individual local authorities to be funded from their own resources supplemented by State grants provided by my Department. The initial selection and prioritisation of projects to be funded under the various non-national road grant categories is also a matter for individual local authorities.

My Department has not received an application for funding from Cork County Council for the R585 Ballylicky-Crookstown road in 2001. It would be open to the council to seek funding for this scheme under the EU co-financed specific improvement grants scheme when applications for 2002 are sought by my Department later this year.
