Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Network.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

117 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans he has to upgrade the status of the main road from Bandon to Bantry to national primary or secondary status. [19799/01]

A comprehensive review of the national and regional road system was brought to a conclusion in 1994 with the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of National Roads) Order, 1994 (S.I. 209 of 1994) and the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of Regional Roads) Order, 1994 (S.I. No.400 of 1994). The review was carried out in consultation with the local authorities and took account of representations received from a wide range of local interests.

There are no proposals to make significant changes to the classification of roads in the national or regional network in the near future. Traffic patterns on the network will, however, continue to be monitored to identify any long-term changes which might have implications for road classification.

The Bandon to Bantry Road via Clonakilty and Skibbereen is a national secondary road (N71). There are no plans to classify the road from Bandon to Bantry via Dunmanway as a national road.
