Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Act of Union Exhibition.

Chris Flood

Ceist:

129 Mr. Flood asked the Taoiseach if, in view of the fact that 2001 is the year of the bi-centenary of the Act of Union and that there has been little public debate on this occasion, he will seek to make arrangements with the Ulster Museum in Belfast to allow its exhibition on the Act of Union to be brought here as an aid to better inform people on the events and public debates which took place leading up to the signing of the Act of Union. [20215/01]

In June 1999, the Keough-Notre Dame Centre and the Byrne-Perry Summer School were awarded £5,000 from my Department's commemorative initiatives fund towards the costs of two related conferences on the Act of Union and publication of their proceedings. The Royal Irish Academy held a conference on the Act of Union in June 2000 which was also supported from the commemoration initiatives fund to the amount of £800. The Deputy's suggestion with regard to the Ulster Museum's exhibition will be followed up with the National Museum through the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands.
