Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - Nursing Practices.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

158 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding the administration of non-prescription tablets and products to patients in hospitals by nurses; if the protocols in this regard have been changed recently; if the approval of the doctor is required; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20619/01]

The position is that doctors must prescribe all medication for patients in hospitals and nursing homes. Nurses cannot administer any medication without medical direction. Protocols in this regard have not changed recently. However, An Bord Altranais and the National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery are jointly undertaking a review of the future involvement of nurses and midwives in the prescribing of medical preparations within agreed protocols. This project will involve identification of best international practice, review of the literature and consultation with the nursing, midwifery and allied professions. The project is scheduled to begin this month and is expected to be completed within three years.
