Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Asbestos Risks.

John Bruton

Ceist:

364 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance the primary and secondary schools in County Meath in the infrastructure of which asbestos products have been identified; if each of these has been properly examined and the risks assessed; if works are in hand to deal with the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20990/01]

Detailed surveys and assessments undertaken to date by specialists commissioned by the Office of Public Works have revealed the presence of asbestos in some type or form in the following schools in County Meath: Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Pádraig, Castletown, Navan; St. Colmcille's National School, Skryne; Dunboyne Senior Primary School; St. Mary's Primary School, Trim; Rathbeggan National School, Dunshaughlin and Kilbride National School, Trim.

Works to remove the asbestos have been completed at Castletown, Skryne and Dunboyne and are partially completed at St. Mary's and Kilbride schools in Trim. While there is no danger to occupants from undamaged asbestos, the outstanding works identified in the Trim and Rathbeggan schools will be undertaken over the coming months.

The remaining schools in the county, including second level schools, will be surveyed as soon as possible as part of the national asbestos management programme.
