I am currently examining, in consultation with the Garda authorities, the recommendations of the final report of the Commission on Public Service Pensions relating to the maximum retirement age for new entrants to the Garda Síochána. As the Deputy may be aware, the commission recommended that new entrants to the Garda Síochána should be subject to a minimum retirement age of 55 and should be retained beyond that age, to a maximum age of 60, subject to meeting certain minimum standards of health and fitness on an annual basis. The commission also recommended that there should be no change in relation to the retirement age in so far as serving members are concerned.
