Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

178 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will issue a work permit to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6. [21253/01]

As a rule, work permit applications cannot be granted in respect of individuals who enter this country as tourists, on a visitor's visa. Individuals from visa required countries, such as Mongolia, are normally required to leave the State in order to change their status – in the case in question as a visitor – so as to allow them to work. An application for the work permit in question can only be considered following regularisation of the immigration status. It is a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy O'Donoghue, to decide if the immigration status of the individual in question may be changed.
