Vol. 541 No. 4

Written Answers. - Wheelchair Accessible Schools.

David Stanton

Ceist:

455 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to ensure that all second level schools are wheelchair accessible; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22742/01]

Ensuring that a school building is accessible to all, including wheelchair users, is a design criterion of all new school buildings, including extensions, that are grant aided by my Department.

The position with regard to existing buildings is that my Department will respond as quickly as possible to a request from a school management authority for adaptations necessary to allow any pupil with a mobility problem enrolled in the school, or about to be enrolled in the school, as complete access as possible, given the configuration of the building, to all areas of the building.
