Vol. 541 No. 5

Written Answers. - Insurance Industry.

Tom Hayes

Ceist:

111 Mr. T. Hayes asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the steps she proposes to take to ensure equity and fairness in relation to insurance cover for young drivers. [23051/01]

I established the Motor Insurance Advisory Board in 1998 to examine the factors that influence the cost of motor insurance and, in particular, the relationship between the premiums being levied to different categories of drivers, including young drivers, and the claims experience of those categories. The final report should clarify whether premiums being charged to young people are justified by claims experience.

I will, of course, urgently examine the board's recommendations when received within the overall context of what is legally and practically possible. In accordance with EU law, I am not in a position to intervene in the pricing or underwriting of insurance.

Any individual, who considers that he or she has experienced discrimination contrary to the Equal Status Act, 2000, may refer a complaint to the Director of Equality Investigations for investigation or mediation.
