Vol. 541 No. 5

Written Answers. - FÁS Operations.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

120 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the Government's plans for the future role of FÁS; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23202/01]

The board of FÁS which I appointed earlier this year for a five-year term has commenced a strategic review of its role and operations. I welcome this initiative by the board, which I believe is timely given the changed labour market conditions of recent years, notwithstanding the current period of economic uncertainty.

It is essential that FÁS play a strong role in underpinning recent rapid economic and employment gains. In this regard an important focus will be on continuous upskilling of those both in and seeking employment so as to ensure an adaptable workforce capable of meeting the challenges ahead and in order to maintain and enhance the competitiveness of firms. We are also presented with an opportunity to place a continuing focus on assisting the long-term unemployed and other disadvantaged groups in their transition to employment.

In the context of its strategic review I have indicated to the board that I consider FÁS to have a key role to play in achieving the Government's objectives in employment and labour market terms. I look forward to receipt of the outcome of the FÁS board deliberations.
