Vol. 541 No. 5

Written Answers. - Digital Hub Initiative.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

165 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on the progress in the digital hub initiative; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23054/01]

The digital hub or digital media district project is within the area of responsibility of my colleague, the Minister for Public Enterprise. My Department is, however, represented on the Government liaison committee which has an oversight role on behalf of Government in relation both to this and the related Media Labs Europe project.

The key aspects of the digital hub project, including the framing of a development strategy by the hub company, DMD Limited, and the preparation of draft legislation to place it on a proper formal footing have all been progressed steadily over recent months.

The realisation of projects like this, which would increase our production and exports of knowledge-intensive goods and services, enhances our capacity in information and communication technologies, aids the transformation to a knowledge economy and exploits more of the major investment made in high capacity international optical fibre links, is clearly important.
