Vol. 542 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

110 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if upgrading and refurbishment of the footpath adjacent to the Royal Canal at Grange, Mullingar will take place without further delay; if the fence close to the roadway which separates the green open space from the canal at Grange, Mullingar, will also be repaired; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23616/01]

The issue raised by the Deputy, in relation to upgrading and refur bishment works adjacent to the Royal Canal at Grange, Mullingar, is the day to day responsibility of Waterways Ireland, a North-South implementation body for inland waterways, set up under the British-Irish Agreement signed in March 1999.

Waterways Ireland has informed me that a length of approximately 1km of the footpath on the canal bank between the Mullingar cattle mart and the new roadway bridge located in Grange south townland will be repaired shortly.

With respect to the fence close to the Mullingar-Ballymahon roadway, this was erected by the local authority a number of years ago and any repairs to it are therefore the responsibility of Westmeath County Council.

Question No. 111 lapsed.
