Vol. 543 No. 1

Written Answers. - Office of Director of Consumer Affairs.

Conor Lenihan

Ceist:

105 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the specific powers of the inspectorate of the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs; if such powers include those of entry and search; if so, the basis or authority under which inspectors are empowered and instructed to communicate evidence of prima facie breaches of statute or regulation on an ad hoc basis to employees on retail premises; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25775/01]

The powers of authorised officers of the Director of Consumer Affairs are wide ranging and are set out in both primary and secondary legislation. Powers such as those of entry and inspection of the premises, and any goods on the premises, are provided for. Each authorised officer carries out his-her functions in line with the relevant legislation and the warrants of appointment issued by the Director of Consumer Affairs.
