Vol. 543 No. 5

Written Answers. - Enterprise Liability.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

281 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children his plans to introduce a standard national incident reporting scheme as the backbone of risk management; and if the reported statement of an officer of his Department (details supplied) reflects his views. [27432/01]

The introduction of enterprise liability as the basis for providing indemnity cover for hospitals and doctors provides a unique opportunity to introduce a national system for the collection and analysis of data on the clinical incidents which can adversely affect patients and potentially lead to claims for compensation. On several occasions I have indicated my support for this concept as it has the potential to make a significant contribution to enhancing patient safety.
