Vol. 544 No. 4

Written Answers. - Common Fisheries Policy.

Alan M. Dukes

Ceist:

103 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the position in the World Trade Organisation negotiations on the recommendation from the national strategy review group on the Common Fisheries Policy that fish and fish products should be exempted from any reduction of tariffs. [29003/01]

The CFP strategy review group has recommended that concessions on imports to the EU from developed third countries should be removed. The group also recommended, however, that further concessions should be granted to the least developed countries where duty free access should be implemented over a period of time. I welcome this enlightened view which is broadly in the spirit of Ireland's approach to ensuring the trade negotiations address the vulnerabilities of least developed countries. I will consult further with the industry as the trade round evolves.
