Vol. 544 No. 5

Other Questions. - Global Climate Change.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

13 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the extent to which global climate change featured during his time as chairperson of the UN Security Council. [29162/01]

The issue of global climate change did not feature on the agenda of the UN Security Council during Ireland's Presidency in October this year. The primary responsibility of the Security Council is the maintenance of international peace and security and the Council does not have responsibility for climate change or other environmental issues. The issues which dominated Ireland's Presidency in October were the fight against international terrorism, the situation in Afghanistan, East Timor and African issues such as Somalia.

The issue of global climate change is primarily the responsibility of the Minister for the Environment and Local Government. It is dealt with extensively in many fora and negotiations on this issue are ongoing primarily in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
